Genre(s): Young Adult, Paranormal
Pages: 340
Published: May 2011
Publisher: NAL Hardcover

Summary: "After discovering that vampires populate her town, college student Claire Danvers knows that the undead just want to live their lives. But someone else wants them to get ready to rumble.

There's a new extreme sport getting picked up on the Internet: bare—knuckle fights pitting captured vampires against each other—or humans. Tracking the remote signal leads Claire—accompanied by her friends and frenemies—to discover that what started as an online brawl will soon threaten everyone in Morganville..."

Review: I love this series but this book really showed me some points I liked more than previous books and some I liked less. The drama within the Glass house reaches all new heights in this book. Everyone has secrets from one another and not all of them are good!

Grave Mercy (His Fair Assassin, #1)Dark Triumph (His Fair Assassin, #2)

From Grave Mercy: "Why be the sheep, when you can be the wolf?

Seventeen-year-old Ismae escapes from the brutality of an arranged marriage into the sanctuary of the convent of St. Mortain, where the sisters still serve the gods of old. Here she learns that the god of Death Himself has blessed her with dangerous gifts—and a violent destiny. If she chooses to stay at the convent, she will be trained as an assassin and serve as a handmaiden to Death. To claim her new life, she must destroy the lives of others.

Ismae’s most important assignment takes her straight into the high court of Brittany—where she finds herself woefully under prepared—not only for the deadly games of intrigue and treason, but for the impossible choices she must make. For how can she deliver Death’s vengeance upon a target who, against her will, has stolen her heart?"

Ruination (Worlds Apart, #1)"What if everything came down to a single test? If your life was defined at seventeen, could you handle it? Could you accept your fate leaving the ones you love, or would you risk it all and stay?

One test stands between Vanessa and Central. One chance to make the leap across the walls to a better life. At seventeen, Central considers Vanessa an adult. Her labor role, marriage, and housing divisions will be dictated by her performance on the leap.

Dedication and unfaltering friendship has bonded Vanessa to Garrett as they fight for their chance to leap into Central. But what happens when love overtakes reason? When defiance in the name of love creates an unintentional fracture in their nation.

Without warning Vanessa is at the mercy of the nation that’s supposed to protect her. Exiled and abandoned she must fight but she find’s she’s not alone. With her heart divided she seeks her revenge, but will her stand be enough?"

Dragons at Crumbling Castle: And Other Tales

"This never-before-published collection of fourteen funny and inventive tales by acclaimed author Sir Terry Pratchett features a memorable cast of inept wizards, sensible heroes, and unusually adventuresome tortoises.   Including more than one hundred black-and-white illustrations, the appealingly designed book celebrates Pratchett’s inimitable wordplay and irreverent approach to the conventions of storytelling.

These accessible and mischievous tales are an ideal introduction for young readers to this beloved author. Established fans of Pratchett’s work will savor the playful presentation of the themes and ideas that inform his best-selling novels."

The Art of Hayao Miyazaki by Dani Cavallaro (review)

The Anime Art of Hayao Miyazaki
The Art of Hayao Miyazaki

by Dani Cavallaro

Genre:  Artbooks
Pages: 204
Publisher: McFarland & Co

Summary: A critical study of Miyazaki's work, this book begins with an analysis of the visual conventions of manga, Japanese comic books, anime, an overview of Japanese animated films, and a consideration of the techniques deployed by both traditional cell and computer animation and details his foray into comic books and animation.

Review:   A Very interesting and educational read. I have always enjoyed Miyazaki's films (even before I knew what anime was), so getting a new perspective on the man behind it all made for a fascinating read.

Captcha?! On my blog?!?! *UpDaTE

So I just got an email from someone saying I have captcha on my blog!  Has anyone else come across this here?  And after I recently complained how much I hate seeing it on blogs too!!!

If it is up, I cannot figure out where so any tips would be appreciated.  I want to keep commenting as simple as possible .

Thanks!

*UPDATE*

Okay, so I did a bit of investigating and found this:
"The Blogger / Google login status, and the ability to post comments, is sensitive to both cookie and script filters.  Your readers may need to enable (stop filtering) "third party cookies", in their browser and on their computer.  The effects of the newly unavoidable CAPTCHA, and the Google "One account" login, requires third party cookies, even more than before."

As found in the help forums.  I Guess this is called 'recaptcha' and it was something that I have no control over that I can find.

So to my readers  that are getting this (about 1/4 it seems), you can check to see what is going on with your browser or bear with the evil recaptcha.  If I can figure something out on my end I will do what I can.  If anyone has more information I would love to know.  I am so, so sorry that this new hassle has popped up for some of you.  You should be able to browse sites how you want and I am irritated that we don't even have a say in it.  Plus, if I want robots posting on my blog, that should be MY choice, lol!

I appreciate everyone letting me know what they found when commenting here.  Thanks!!!!

Title: A COLD LEGACY
Author: Megan Shepherd
Pub. Date: January 27, 2015
Publisher: Balzer+Bray/HarperCollins
Pages: 400

After killing the men who tried to steal her father’s research, Juliet—along with Montgomery, Lucy, Balthazar, and a deathly ill Edward—has escaped to a remote estate on the Scottish moors. Owned by the enigmatic Elizabeth von Stein, the mansion is full of mysteries and unexplained oddities: dead bodies in the basement, secret passages, and fortune-tellers who seem to know Juliet’s secrets. Though it appears to be a safe haven, Juliet fears new dangers may be present within the manor’s own walls.

Then Juliet uncovers the truth about the manor’s long history of scientific experimentation—and her own intended role in it—forcing her to determine where the line falls between right and wrong, life and death, magic and science, and promises and secrets. And she must decide if she’ll follow her father’s dark footsteps or her mother’s tragic ones, or whether she’ll make her own.

With inspiration from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, this breathless conclusion to the Madman’s Daughter trilogy is about the things we’ll sacrifice to save those we love—even our own humanity.

A COLD LEGACY excerpt
p.21-24

Montgomery stopped the horses outside a tavern. He came to the carriage door, opening it just a crack to keep the rain from drenching us. “I’m going to ask directions. We can’t be far now.”

We watched him saunter over the muddy street as though he didn’t even feel the bite of freezing rain. A face appeared in the tavern window. The door opened and he spoke to a woman in a wool dress for a few moments, then stomped back through the mud. “This village is called Quick,” he told us. “The manor’s only five miles from here.”

“Did you hear that?” Lucy murmured to Edward, still stroking his hair. “We’re almost there. Just hold on. Everything will be all right once we arrive.”

Montgomery’s eyes shifted to me. Neither of us wanted to remind Lucy that the prospect of Edward’s fever breaking—and the Beast’s reappearance—was almost more frightening than the fever itself. Delirious, he was less of a threat.

Monday Madness giveaway 10

Monday Madness Giveaway

What is this?   Well to start with, it is Monday.  For many, that means back to work or school (well not quite yet but summer is almost over....).  Most of us are not fans of this day.  So to brighten it up a bit I will be hosting a weekly (or bi weekly) giveaway.

The prizes may vary each week. You never know so be sure to check back.  The only thing I promise is that the prize will always be bookish in nature.  ebooks, arcs, swag,  gift cards, etc.  Entry requirements will also change week-to-week.

This weeks prize is for US only.  I have a swag pack of goodies that needs a new home.
Pack will include bookmarks, bookplates, a keychain, a mini stuffed character (the only hint I will give is that is from a paranormal series and has wings and is male), and a reading mug. I will also try to add a couple books to the box (I have a bit of room) if I have any in a genre you like.  I will go over options with the winner.

Entry is simple:

In a Handful of Dust by Mindy McGinnis (review)

In a Handful of Dust (Not a Drop to Drink, #2)
Not a Drop to Drink:
In a Handful of Dust (2)

by Mindy McGinnis

Genre(s): Dystopian/Post Apocalyptic, Adventure
Pages: 384
Published: Sept 2014
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books

Summary: (Taken from Goodreads)     "The only thing bigger than the world is fear.

Lucy’s life by the pond has always been full. She has water and friends, laughter and the love of her adoptive mother, Lynn, who has made sure that Lucy’s childhood was very different from her own. Yet it seems Lucy’s future is settled already—a house, a man, children, and a water source—and anything beyond their life by the pond is beyond reach.

When disease burns through their community, the once life-saving water of the pond might be the source of what’s killing them now. Rumors of desalinization plants in California have lingered in Lynn’s mind, and the prospect of a “normal” life for Lucy sets the two of them on an epic journey west to face new dangers: hunger, mountains, deserts, betrayal, and the perils of a world so vast that Lucy fears she could be lost forever, only to disappear in a handful of dust.

In this companion to Not a Drop to Drink, Mindy McGinnis thrillingly combines the heart-swelling hope of a journey, the challenges of establishing your own place in the world, and the gripping physical danger of nature in a futuristic frontier.

Review:     This book takes place ten years after the events in Not a Drop to Drink. Lynn is no longer a teenager. She is now in the "mother" role of raising her own teen. Remember Lucy, the little girl she took in? Yep that is the girl we get to hear this story from. This book has a different feel to it. In many ways I liked this book better than the first book.

Destined to become his clan's next and perhaps greatest ever high wizard, Turesobei feels smothered under everyone's expectations. He's supposed to blow off some steam and get a dose of real world experience.

The Shadowed Manse (The Arthur Paladin Chronicles # 1)The Warlock's Gambit (The Arthur Paladin Chronicles # 2)

From the Shadowed Manse:  "Abandoned by his family ... trapped in a house of shadows ... destined for more than 7th grade math. Arthur Paladin doesn't fit in. Not at home with the ultra-strict grandmother who had to raise him after his mother died and his dad disappeared. And not at school where the teachers think he's trouble and the other kids think he's a freak. But every night he dreams about learning amazing things, the sort of things you need to know to save the world. Then Arthur finds out his grandmother may send him to military school, which leads to a fight with his "perfect" cousin, which leads to the mysterious plate over his heart getting broken, which leads to ... his whole world turning upside down. Shadow creatures appear out of nowhere to kill him. An angelic being from another dimension begs for his help. He gets locked in a house that looks like an English cottage on the outside but is actually a mansion on the inside. It's packed with shades, flying across the universe, and he's only got Morgan Apple to help him - Morgan Apple who apparently sits beside him every day just to call him a moron. And that's when life gets really weird. That's when Arthur finds out he's the next Multiversal Paladin. Fans of Doctor Who and Harry Potter will be enchanted by this universe-spanning, high-octane, whimsical, science-fantasy adventure."

Arc Books

2015 Discussion Challenge3

Arcs

Something every book blogger loves to get.  New bloggers wonder how to get them, intermediate bloggers work on balancing them and experienced bloggers seem to take them in stride and are the envy of other bloggers when they get a books others wish they received.

This seems to be how it goes.  If different for you let me know.

So lets go over the levels more:
New bloggers:  I know when I started blogging I'd see all these people with arc copies of the book weeks-months before the release and I remember wishing I could be like that one day.  So I started off with Netgalley.  Then after a few months, I learned of Edelweiss.  These two sites are great to start up a collection if eArcs.

Review:  **While reading the Vampire Academy series is not necessary to reading Bloodlines, I do recommend reading those books first. Please note that some parts of this review may contain spoilers to the VA series!**

When I first picked up this book, I wondered what I was getting myself into. Was this going to be another "Vampire Academy?" Even though it is a spin-off series, there was still a lot of trepidation about this, especially after reading so many mixed reviews. What I can say it that while there are several characters from VA in this series, the focus is in a very different direction. While I love the VA series, I am pleased to see the different perspectives and also to hopefully see Adrian finally get his happy ending.

I'm back!  Wow, I have not joined in this since October!  So I have a ton to share.  I will not be able to share everything in one week but hopefully over the next few weeks I will slowly get my books caught up. Right now I am still simply trying to play catchup with my blog but here are a few of the books I have acquired over the past 2 1/2 months.  Many more to share on future STS's until I catch up listing them all and actually shelving them.

Review:  This volume has some of the best back story of the whole series! Did you ever want to learn more about Kaname and his past? This is the volume to do so. Just be sure to have read all previous volumes first. This series can be confusing enough without knowing everything else that has already happened and this volume is no exception.
